SXSW in 4 gigabytes or less…

SXSW in 4 gigabytesIf you missed SXSW like me, you can have an opportunity to hear all the artists and bands from the comfort of your ipod. I briefly mentioned it in an earlier post. A kind gentleman by the name of Greg Hewgill compiled music from all the artists that were showcased at this year’s SXSW. It is a little over 3 gigabytes of music. You will need torrent client to download the file. If you need help to download the file, go here for guidance.

If you download it and listen to some of the music, let me know some of your favorite tracks. I will post some of my favorites after I finish downloading the file. While you are waiting for your download take at a look at some of the video coverage of the event. (Update) I just fond out someone took the time to review the over 768 songs that is included in the torrent. Check it out here.

Exploiting a Scandal to Sell Music…

dupree myspace

I just saw this video from Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine. He discusses the fact that Ashley Dupree (i.e. She ‘worked’ with Elliot Spitzer) might get a record deal. Put it this way, I think the music industry is so desperate to make a dollar they will do anything including exploiting a scandal. I love Jay Smooth’s take on it and how it relates to Hip hop and the music industry. How do you feel about it?

What is Barack feeling…Hip Hop?

obama hip hop

Again I want to thank The Couch Sessions for this video. Jay-Z should get a huge bump from this one.

What is your opinion of this video? What would Hilary like? You know that could be a good premise for a blog. How about Stuff that Democrats Like… or Stuff that Republicans Like (note: I have already trademarked them both).

Wale signed to Interscope, Ronson to Produce Album

wale+hilton

Wale, a Don’t Sleep on Artist and in current rotation here at RadioMilwaukee. A rapper from DC that infuses the sound of DC Go-Go into his music. The rapper has been heavily sought out by various labels, but no deals until now. He has inked a joint deal with Interscope and Mark Ronson’s (Amy Winehouse prodcucer) label Allido Records. The new album will be produced by Ronson.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – It has just been announced on 93.9 WKYS that DC-area hip hop artist, Wale, has signed with Interscope Records in a joint venture deal with three-time Grammy award winning producer Mark Ronson’s Allido Records. Here is the press release (thanks Couch Sessions)

Wale, 23, has seen a tremendous amount of success for an unsigned hip hop artist over the past year, gracing the covers of URB and DNR magazines, doing remixes for Justice, Chris Brown and MIA, performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, song licenses with Nike, ENTOURAGE and MTV and a growing internet buzz surrounding his most recent mixtape 100 MILES AND RUNNING and his upcoming Seinfeld-inspired project, THE MIXTAPE ABOUT NOTHING. Entertainment Weekly recently reported that the mixtape features a skit from Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Wale signed a production deal with DJ-turned-producer Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Christina Aguilera) in June of 2007 after impressing him on Ronson’s European tour. Following an intense, six-month bidding war, Wale signed to a joint venture between Allido Records and Interscope, saying Jimmy Iovine, Luke Wood and the whole Interscope staff understood his vision better than anyone else.

“Look at their track record,” said Wale via phone on his way to perform at a Justice concert in DC. “Dre, Eminem, 50, Pharrell, Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas, Soulja Boy…the list goes on.”

“This is the best possible situation we could ask for,” says Daniel Weisman, Wale’s manager. “We waited and kept grinding until someone came with something we felt reflected the work we’ve put in; Interscope got it.”

Mark Ronson will executive produce Wale’s untitled debut album and contribute production to the project due out in fall. Other tentative contributors include past Wale-collaborators Osinachi (“Nike Boots”) and Best Kept Secret (“Back In The Go Go”), along with Just Blaze, Pharrell, Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Justice and DJ Toomp.

Allido Records is a New York City-based label founded in 2004 by Mark Ronson and former manager, Rich Kleiman. Allido Records has put out releases by Rhymefest and Daniel Merrieather through J Records, and by Mark Ronson through RCA. Wale’s album will be the first release through their new joint venture deal with Interscope.

Don’t forget to check out his blog/company who he partners with his manager Daniel Weisman elitaste

…And ‘Justice’ for All

Justice

Well one of the biggest groups from 2007 is continuing their dominance. The french duo known as Justice is headlining the MySpace Tour along with Diplo, DJ Mehdi, Chromeo, Busy P(Daft Punk’s manager and founder of Justice’s label Ed Banger). The tour will be stopping through Chicago on March 20th at the Riviera. Check out their new video for the song “DVNO”

According to band member Xavier de Rosnay, “DVNO” stands for “Divino.” de Rosnay states, “In every suburb of the world, in every city, there’s always a nightclub called El Divino… Clubs where you have to wear like a white shirt to get in.”

The vocalist featured in the song is Mehdi Pinson from the band Scenario Rock.

The video for the song, directed by So-Me, Yorgo Tloupas and Machine Molle, features band members Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé playing piano at the end.
